Record violin lessons hands-free

Playing violin, neither hand is ever free: the left hand holds the instrument, the right hand holds the bow. Every other recorder expects a free hand you don’t have — so students put the violin down, tap, pick it up, and lose the position and the moment. VoiceCue was built for exactly this: the recorder obeys your voice instead.

The short answer: put your phone on the music stand, open VoiceCue, and run the whole lesson by voice — “BEGIN” to record a passage, “DISCARD” to retake it instantly when intonation slips, “STOP” to save. Your bow hand never leaves the bow.

In the lesson: capture every passage

  1. Phone on the stand, VoiceCue listeningSet it beside the score before the lesson starts. No account, no setup — it listens for commands on-device.
  2. “BEGIN” before the passageYour teacher demonstrates or you play the excerpt — captured without anyone stepping away from the instrument.
  3. “DISCARD” to redo it on the spotA shifted position or a missed string crossing? Retake immediately, while the correction is fresh — no violin-down, tap, violin-up.
  4. “STOP” saves it to the folderTakes land in the Studio Library, and with Premium’s Lesson Folders they’re filed by teacher, ready to review or send.

The strings toolkit around the recorder

Tuner that speaks violin

Premium’s Chromatic Tuner is chromatic by default, with instrument filter chips: select violin and it shows only the notes relevant to the instrument — no hunting through every pitch on the wheel. Viola, cello and other instruments are covered the same way.

Intonation work, built in

The Intonation Practice Drone and Reference Tone Generator (Premium) give you a pitch to lean against while you play scales and passages — and because the recorder runs by voice, you can capture the attempt without putting the bow down.

Video for bow and posture

Some things you have to see: bow hold, straight bowing, shifting mechanics. VoiceCue records video with the same BEGIN / DISCARD / STOP commands (Pro, with trial sessions in the free tier).

Practice they can verify

The free Practice Timer & Log tracks sessions automatically. Share a screenshot of the log page with your teacher over WhatsApp or email — simple proof of the week’s work, no extra app for them to install.

Sending takes to your teacher

With Premium’s Lesson Folders, a saved take is filed under your teacher and submitted in one tap over WhatsApp or email — the file arrives auto-named with the lesson name and date, plus an optional note from you (“the shift in bar 24 still feels off”). One honest detail: bookmarks you drop with “SNAP” during a take live on your phone only — your teacher receives the audio or video file itself, so put anything they must notice in the note. Schools and studios can give every student Premium free through the partner program.

Questions

What is the best app to record violin lessons hands-free?

A voice-controlled recorder like VoiceCue. Violinists have no free hand — one holds the instrument, the other the bow — so VoiceCue runs the session by voice: “BEGIN” to record, “DISCARD” for an instant retake, “STOP” to save, all recognized on-device from your music stand.

Does VoiceCue have a tuner for violin?

Yes, in Premium. The Chromatic Tuner is chromatic by default, with instrument filter chips — select violin and it shows only the notes relevant to the violin. Premium also includes an Intonation Practice Drone and a Reference Tone Generator for intonation work.

How do I send my violin teacher a recording of my practice?

With Premium’s Lesson Folders, takes are filed by teacher and submitted in one tap over WhatsApp or email. The file arrives auto-named with the lesson name and date. Teachers receive the audio (m4a) or video (mp4) file itself — bookmarks are local to your phone and don’t travel with the file.

Can I record video of my bowing and posture?

Yes. VoiceCue records video as well as audio, started and stopped by the same voice commands — useful for checking bow hold, posture and shifting. Video is a Pro feature ($9.99, one-time) with trial sessions included in the free tier’s shared pool of 25.

Does VoiceCue work for viola, cello and other strings?

Yes — the same hands-free problem applies to every string instrument, and the tuner’s filter chips cover violin, cello and more. VoiceCue profiles also adapt the toolkit for strings, winds, brass, guitar, drums and voice.
